Tickets go on sale Monday, Nov. 19 at 10 a.m. and can be purchased through The Field Museum box office by calling 312.665.7400 or online at www.chicagochildrenstheatre.org.

“We are thrilled to have this opportunity to partner with the Field and a respected artist such as Thomas,” says Chicago Children's Theatre Artistic Director Jacqueline Russell. “It is part of our mission to inspire young people and families to lead lives of adventure, courage and curiosity so this production and location create a perfect kick off for our season.”

The Selfish Giant, featuring original puppet design by Jesse Mooney-Bullock, costume design by Meredith Miller and music by Michael Smith, tells the story of a grumpy old giant who forbids the children in his village from playing in his beautiful garden. After the children are locked out, the trees and flowers refuse to grow and the garden plunges into eternal winter. Finally, the children of the village sneak back into the garden, bringing with them the rebirth of spring.

Blair Thomas is the founder and artistic director of Blair Thomas & Company, which creates Chamber Puppet Theater for adults, and for children under the name Fast Fish Puppet Theater. As co-founder of Redmoon Theater in 1989, Blair Thomas spent a decade leading a vision to create large-scale spectacle theater. Blair has served as curator for Chicago's International Puppet Festival, as an Associate Adjunct Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and was the first recipient of the Jim Henson Fellowship at the University of Maryland. Along with composer Michael Smith, he created The Snow Queen, which will be performed for the second year at Victory Gardens this fall.

The Selfish Giant is produced in association with The Field Museum, one of the world's foremost natural history museums. Theatre goers can make a day of it by also seeing the Field's many permanent exhibitions that are popular with young families, such as Sue, the largest T. rex ever found, Underground Adventure, a bug's-eye view of the world beneath our feet, and What is an Animal?, an exploration of the diversity of animal life.

In addition, the Museum's Crown Family PlayLab is a new, hands-on learning center specifically designed for children ages 2-6; it features art and music studios, a Native American pueblo, an Illinois woodland, and other fun-filled activity areas that help children learn about the natural world and diverse cultures.
The Red Kite Project

CHICAGO CHILDREN'S THEATRE LAUNCHES THE RED KITE PROJECT,
A NEW EDUCATIONAL INITIATIVE TO SERVE CHILDREN WITH AUTISM

A collaboration with London's Oily Cart Theatre Company, in association with Chicago Children's Museum and The Autism Program at The University of Illinois-Chicago

CHICAGO – Chicago Children's Theatre proudly announces the launch of a major new educational initiative for their 2007-2008 season with The Red Kite Project. Created with London's Oily Cart Theatre Company, The Red Kite Project is a highly interactive and multi-sensory educational performance installation that focuses on the needs of children with autism. The project is presented in association with Chicago Children's Museum and The Autism Program at The University of Illinois-Chicago.

Chicago Children's Theatre will officially launch The Red Kite Project in October 2007 when it brings members of London's Oily Cart Theatre Company to Chicago for a series of workshops taking place Oct. 8 -19. Led by Oily Cart founders Artistic Director Tim Webb, Designer Amanda Webb and Composer Max Reinhardt, the workshops will include Chicago-based theater artists, special education teachers and Chicago Children's Theatre artistic staff. The principal goal of the October workshops will be to identify thematic content for the performance installation and to generate design ideas. In mid-April 2008, Chicago Children's Theatre will install The Red Kite Project at Chicago Children's Museum for a limited run.

“As founders of Oily Cart, we are delighted to have been invited to Chicago, a city with such a rich cultural life and in particular we are honored to be working with that dynamic organization, Chicago Children's Theatre,” says Tim Webb. “Together we will be exploring and developing theater for young people with an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This is an audience that, in the U.K. at least, is sadly neglected but which is surely as entitled to imaginative, artistic provision as any other group in society. I am convinced that the synergy created by the collaboration of our two companies will accelerate the development of theater that truly engages these young people and the people who live and work with them.”

Oily Cart Theatre Company is committed to developing theatrical work for children with complex disabilities and the very young. Formed in 1981, Oily Cart focuses on the needs of disabled youth and their families, adapting work especially for them. Using its own original scripts, the company draws upon a vast array of theatrical styles and techniques. Recognizing the audience's demands, Oily Cart develops new forms of need- and age- appropriate theater that excites the senses and encourages family interaction. Communication and shared experience are among the best tools for families dealing with autism and Oily Cart has developed proven methods for stimulating each.

The driving force behind The Red Kite Project is Chicago Children's Theatre's Artistic Director, Jacqueline Russell. In her capacity as an artist in residence for the past decade at Agassiz Elementary School, Russell has had the opportunity to work with students with autism, witnessing first hand the benefits of theater for this unique audience.

“Recent statistics indicate one out of every 166 children is born with an autistic spectrum disorder and the rates continue to climb,” notes Russell. “In our short history, Chicago Children's Theatre has worked to create meaningful education programs for children and it is clear that this is an important and underserved segment for us to address. Now, with the help of Oily Cart, Chicago Children's Museum, The Autism Program, and the generous support of the Pritzker Pucker Foundation, we feel well versed and prepared to take on this exciting and much needed educational initiative.”

Chicago Children's Theatre's education programs have reached over 10,000 children in Chicago. In the autumn of 2007 the company will focus its efforts exclusively on the development of The Red Kite Project. The intent is to offer The Red Kite Project to as broad and diverse a community as possible. Ideally, the project will be replicated throughout Illinois and, in the long-term vision, the country.

About Chicago Children's Theatre

Chicago Children's Theatre aspires to enrich our community through diverse and significant theatrical programming that engages and inspires the child in all of us. Chicago Children's Theatre focuses on the production of first-rate children's theater in Chicago, with top writing, performing and directorial talent and high-quality design and production expertise.

Led by Artistic Director Jacqueline Russell, Executive Director Claude Binder and Board Chair Todd Leland, the company is supported by a dynamic Board of Directors comprised of dedicated individuals from the fields of entertainment, philanthropy and business, and a committed Artistic Council of Chicago-based actors, directors, musicians and designers.

Founded in 2005 with its Inaugural Production, A Year With Frog and Toad, Chicago Children's Theatre strives to provide affordable and accessible theater for families and area school children.
Go, Dog. Go!

CHICAGO CHILDREN'S THEATRE ANNOUNCES A NEW LOCATION FOR THE CHICAGO PREMIERE OF GO, DOG. GO! APRIL 13-MAY 20

Chicago Children's Theatre's big top tent will make its home at Butler Field in Grant Park for the Chicago premiere of the stage adaptation of this classic children's story

CHICAGO – Chicago Children's Theatre today announced that it has chosen a new location for the tent in which it will stage its high-energy, fun-filled production of Go, Dog. Go! April 13-May 20. In an unprecedented partnership with Chicago Park District, Butler Field in Grant Park, located at Monroe Street and Lake Shore Drive will be transformed with a 700 seat circus tent for Chicago premiere of this much-loved children's story. The press performance will be Sunday, April 22 at 3 p.m.

With the new location comes an improved circus tent better suited for the lively production. Equipped with superior technical features and a more intimate feel, the new Chicago Children's Theatre big top will provide an enhanced experience for the entire audience.

“We are thrilled and grateful to have the opportunity to work with the Chicago Park District to bring Go, Dog. Go! to Chicago audiences. It is a privilege to be the first theatre company to pitch a circus tent in Grant Park. It will be a truly unique theatergoing experience,” said Claude Binder, Executive Director.

Adapted from P.D. Eastman's classic children's book by Steven Dietz and Allison Gregory, Go, Dog, Go! promises to thrill audiences with a chaotic carnival of music and physical comedy that celebrates the brilliant simplicity of life. Dogs of all colors, shapes and sizes dance, sing, work, play, skate and climb through a magical world where dogs are king. Go, Dog. Go! will be directed by Andrew White, Jim Lasko will serve as production designer and Jonathan Mastro will serve as musical director.

“The Go, Dog. Go! team of actors, designers and staff will bring all sorts of circus elements – juggling, clowning, live music – that will make this an hour and a half of hilarious delight,” said Andrew White.

An impressive cast of actors with specialties in children's theatre, clowning and physical comedy includes Molly Brennan, Adrian Danzig, Dean Evans, Alison Halstead and Johanna Miller.

“I cannot wait to see the kids in our audience react to the explosion of color, humor and energy of Go, Dog. Go!” said Jacqueline Russell, Artistic Director. “Andy White, Jim Lasko and Jonathan Mastro make a perfect production team equipped to fill the tent with a thrilling, joyful production that will delight audiences of all ages.”

“P.D. Eastman's timeless work honors the joyous simplicity of the world around us. Therefore, in crafting a stage version of Go, Dog. Go!, it is not our intention to fill out or open up the story in the style of many traditional adaptations. We have, in fact, added virtually no words of our own,” explained Steven Dietz. Added Allison Gregory, “Expanding the book would, we believe, robs it of its essential wondrous and loopy anarchy. Instead, we hope to celebrate and explore the existing words and pictures; to look not outside the book, but more closely within it – in the same way that a child (and parents) can read Mr. Eastman's book night after night and find something new and remarkable with every turn of the page.”

“I am extremely pleased to partner with Andy White to create this exciting production,” said Jim Lasko, Artistic Director of Redmoon Theater. “The whimsical story and narrative of P.D. Eastman's book is a perfect match for the dynamic talent in our team of designers. I look forward to a truly captivating show in Chicago Children's Theatre's spectacular circus tent.”

April also brings the Chicago Children's Theatre Gala on April 21, at 2:00 p.m. This family friendly Gala embodies the fun spirit of Go, Dog. Go! with a special performance under the big top. After the show, guests will join the cast of dogs to the reception which will include cocktails and dinner. Tables are currently on sale for $5,000-10,000 and can be reserved by calling the Gala hotline at 773.227.0180 x50 or by emailing gala@chicagochildrenstheatre.org.
Dandelion Wine

November 9, 2006

PERFORMANCES OF CHICAGO CHILDREN'S THEATRE PRODUCTION OF RAY BRADBURY'S DANDELION WINE BEGIN NOVEMBER 11

Revised Schedule Announced for Production at The Steppenwolf Upstairs Theatre.

CHICAGO – Chicago Children's Theatre, in keeping with its mission to produce family theater of the highest quality in Chicago, begins its Inaugural Season with Ray Bradbury's theatrical adaptation of his most personal novel, Dandelion Wine, in the Steppenwolf Upstairs Theatre, 1650 N. Halsted St., November 11 - December 31, 2006. Award-winning director, Eric Rosen (Artistic Director, About Face Theatre), stages this magical story of an Illinois childhood.

Revised performance schedule has been announced; please see calendar on page three for details.

In this homage to his Midwestern roots, Bradbury brings to life one unforgettable summer full of skinned knees, the smell of freshly cut grass, squishy new sneakers, time machines and a fortune telling Tarot witch. Bradbury's magical story is a sensory explosion that reminds us to cherish the simple pleasures of youth.

“[I keep the child within me alive] by being in love every day of my life,” Bradbury recently told Chicago Children's Theatre Artistic Director Jacqueline Russell. “I've loved writing since I was 12. Because I've gone on loving and writing every day for 70 years, I've stayed young. Dandelion Wine wouldn't work unless I still had that young thing in me. The play is about me as an older man, talking to my younger self. I find that the connectivity between generations never changes. It still exists today.”

“We want our audience, both young and old, to come see Dandelion Wine and access the child within themselves,” said Russell. “We hope that this play will encourage children and families to talk more, and to discover the time machines in their own lives, in their own households. We're thrilled to have the opportunity to produce such a classic adaptation as Dandelion Wine.”

Ray Bradbury is one of the 20th century's most prolific and imaginative writers. Born in Waukegan, Illinois in 1920, Bradbury is the author of more than 500 published works, including The Martian Chronicles, Fahrenheit 451, Something Wicked This Way Comes, and The Illustrated Man. He is the recipient of numerous awards including the National Book Foundation's Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters (2000) and the National Medal of Arts (2004).

The production will be directed by Eric Rosen, co-founder and Artistic Director of About Face Theatre. Recent projects include the book and lyrics of Winesburg, Ohio (Jeff Award, Best Adaptation), and the direction of Theater District (Jeff Award, Best New Play). Notable collaborations include the development of the Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize-winning I Am My Own Wife with MoisÉs Kaufman and Doug Wright, 33 Variations with MoisÉs Kaufman and Mary Zimmerman's Eleven Rooms of Proust. Rosen holds a doctorate in Performance Studies from Northwestern University and was an NEA/TCG Directing Fellow.

The stellar creative team includes Chicago Children's Theatre Associate Artistic Director Geoffrey M. Curley as scenic designer; Janice Pytel as costume designer; Chris Binder as lighting designer; AndrÈ Pluess as sound designer; and Mele Ortiz as Prop Master.

Michael Viruet plays 12-year-old Douglas Spaulding alongside Bubba Weiler, who plays his brother Tom. Together, the two boys and Richard Henzel (grandfather), spend a magical summer in Green Town, Illinois, exploring the world around them. Other cast members include Lesley Bevan (Anne), Sean Cooper (Forrester), Leonard Kraft (Freeleigh), Anthony Sullivan (John), Kirk Anderson (Matt), John Steven Crowley (Leo/Sanderson), Jane Baxter Miller (Roberta/Fern) and Jacqueline Williams (Fern/Roberta). Ryan Castillo, Amber Coartney and Patricia Lomden are all members of the ensemble.

Chicago Children's Theatre has previously announced three additional productions for its inaugural season. Next up is 4-ISH, Amsterdam's acclaimed dance and skate spectacular, which will be in Chicago from January 19-28, 2007 at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park, 205 E. Randolph St. In an exciting partnership with the Chicago Park District, Chicago Children's Theatre subsequently brings the Chicago premiere of Go, Dog. Go! to a classic circus tent pitched in Daley Bicentennial Plaza in Grant Park, April 13-May 26, 2007. Go, Dog. Go! will be directed by Andrew White and Jim Lasko will serve as production designer. Steven Dietz's adaptation of Dan Gutman's Honus and Me, directed by Sean Graney, caps the season July 20-August 26, 2007 in the Goodman's Owen Theatre, 170 N. Honus and Me tells the story of Joe Stoshak, a young baseball fanatic who stumbles upon the most valuable baseball card of all time - a Honus Wagner T-206 - while cleaning his neighbor's attic. The card acts as a portal between Joe and Wagner's lives, and young Joe is suddenly transported back in time to the seventh inning of the 1909 World Series, where Wagner imparts upon him the confidence and wisdom he needs to succeed not only in baseball, but also in life.

Dan Gutman is the author of more than 60 beloved children's books. Honus and Me is first in a series of seven baseball card adventure books. Steven Dietz adapted the book and is one of America's most widely produced playwrights, having written more than 20 plays that have been seen at more than 100 regional theaters throughout the United States and abroad. He is the recipient of the PEN U.S.A. He has been awarded two Jeff Citations and an After Dark award for directing. In 2004, he was named Chicagoan of the Year for Theater by the Chicago Tribune, and Chicago's Best Avant Garde Director by Chicago Magazine. He is a current recipient of the NEA/TCG Career Development Program Grant for Directors.

Educational Programming

Chicago Children's Theatre is also undertaking several education initiatives in its Inaugural Season.

Chicago Children's Theatre will continue its partnership with the Notebaert Nature Museum, beginning with a summer camp for 4 and 5-year-olds called "Just Act Naturally," in which storytelling, music, movement and nature are combined to enhance creativity through exploration of the arts and sciences. The two-week camp will be held from Monday, August 7 to Friday, August 18 at the Notebaert Nature Museum.

In January 2007, Chicago Children's Theatre offers the ISH Institute for underserved youth for just the second time in North America. The ISH Institute provides participating at-risk youth with the opportunity to produce their own ISH-style show, on topics relevant to their own lives. Students work intensively with the cast and crew of 4-ISH to create a performance piece and learn about the necessary technical aspects, while also taking part in management and public relations workshops. The program culminates with the students' production, W-ISH, being performed on the set of 4-ISH for peers, parents, and the community. After School Matters, a non-profit organization that provides out-of-school opportunities for Chicago teens in the arts, sports, technology and communications, will partner with Chicago Children's Theatre to identify ISH Institute's participants. This work is supported by United Airlines.

A third education program targets children in the Dearborn Homes of the Chicago Housing Authority. Cheryl Lynn Bruce, a Chicago Children's Theatre Artistic Council Member, once again directs the Youth Drama Workshop which exposes participating youth to theater, music, dance, art and culture workshops that develop social and communicative skills and a meaningful means of expression. The Youth Drama Workshop concludes with a public performance for peers, parents, and the community.

Finally, Chicago Children's Theatre will continue both its Student Scholarship and Student Matinee programs, which enable underserved school groups to attend Chicago Children's Theatre performances free of charge, or at significantly discounted rates. In 2005, the student programs provided free or discounted admission to A Year With Frog and Toad for more than 4,000 students. In addition to the student programs, Chicago Children's Theatre offers the Target Family Matinee Series. This Sunday performance series, sponsored by the Target Corporation, provides a special two-for-one ticket offer designed to encourage participation of those communities with limited access to the arts.

Membership and Ticket Information

Chicago Children's Theatre Family Memberships go on sale Friday, June 9 and are available now at a special introductory rate of $45. Dearborn St., with previews beginning Jan. 14 and regular performances from Jan. 20 through March 5. The press performance will be on Friday, Jan. 20 at 6:30 p.m. and a special Inaugural Production Gala will be held Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006.

A Year With Frog and Toad follows the adventures of two best friends, Frog and Toad, as they grow through four fun-filled seasons collected from Arnold Lobel's classic, award-winning series of children's books. The charming Frog and "worry-wart" Toad leap off Lobel's pages, along with Snail, Mouse and the rest of the animal gang for some kite-flying, sled-racing and cookie-munching fun! Each amphibian comes to life with hilarious and heart-warming songs inspired by jazzy '40s style music, as they explore the challenges, rewards and tenderness of friendship. A Year With Frog and Toad gloriously celebrates the idea that having a very best friend is about as good as life gets.

The Minneapolis Star Tribune describes A Year With Frog and Toad as a "spiffy, snazzy, clever little musical" that is "a welcome success in the world of musical theater." The production is full of "big, bold moments of comedy and fun" according to the Associated Press, and the New York Times applauds the musical for its ability to "[provide] children with plenty of stimulating visual clues, while encouraging them to fill in the blanks with their imaginations."

"A Year With Frog and Toad is the perfect show to introduce Chicago Children's Theatre to local audiences," said CCT Artistic Director, Jacqueline Russell. "It is funny, exuberant, sophisticated and heartfelt; everything we want our productions to be. This show is the beginning of a new era of Chicago theater, an era for kids and families. I can't wait to see it on the stage at the Goodman."

Acclaimed Chicago-based director Henry Godinez will stage A Year With Frog and Toad. The cast includes Joseph Anthony Foronda as "Frog," Bradley Mott as "Toad," and ensemble members La Shawn Banks, Julie Ruth and Ora Jones. Other members of the creative team for A Year With Frog and Toad include Jonathan Mastro, musical director, and choreographer Marla Lampert. CCT Associate Artistic Director Geoffrey M. Curley is the scenic designer and props will be designed by Scott Pondrom. Ray Nardelli and AndrÉ Pleuss will design the sound for the production.

"I am delighted that Chicago Children's Theatre asked me to direct A Year With Frog and Toad because it is such a lovely and meaningful story about friendship told in an imaginative and theatrical way," said Director Henry Godinez. "The music is wonderful, and the characters endearing, fun and silly, and yet the truth of their emotions and feelings is never compromised. It also says something about the cyclical nature of life, and I think it's important for young people to see that the future always brings new possibilities."

Originally produced in Minnesota at the Children's Theatre Company by Peter C. Brosius and Adrianne Lobel, Arnold Lobel's daughter and acclaimed scenic designer, the production moved off-Broadway in 2003, and was subsequently moved to Broadway's Cort Theater. The show had a successful Broadway run, selling out to audiences of all ages and was honored with three 2003 Tony Award nominations, including Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Original Score. Written by brothers Robert and Willie Reale, the musical is an adaptation of Arnold Lobel's timeless children's stories.

"Speaking on behalf of everyone at the Goodman Theatre, I am thrilled to welcome Chicago Children's Theatre to the Goodman, and am pleased that Resident Artistic Associate Henry Godinez will direct their inaugural production," said Goodman Executive Director Roche Schulfer. "We are delighted to support CCT for their inaugural production of A Year With Frog and Toad, which, along with our annual production of A Christmas Carol and programs for young audiences, will further our objective of serving Chicago-area children and families."

Brothers Robert Reale, composer, and Willie Reale, playwright and lyricist, have collaborated with each other on many projects including Once Around The City, produced by Second Stage Theatre and Quark Victory, presented by the Williamstown Theatre Festival in the summer of 1999. Robert is an award-winning composer whose music can be heard on television each week on 20/20 and Inside Edition. In addition to composing for numerous television shows, Robert's credits include stage plays and film scores. Willie founded the 52nd Street Project in New York City, an organization that brings inner-city children together with professional theater artists to create theater. He has produced hundreds of plays during his 18 years with the Project and dozens at numerous regional theaters. Willie has also written television scripts for ABC, PBS, HBO, and the NBC drama Homicide: Life on the Streets.

Director Henry Godinez, a parent himself, is thrilled to be collaborating with Chicago Children's Theatre. His work as a director in Chicago has gained him great respect from audience and theatre professionals alike. Godinez is a Resident Artistic Associate at the Goodman Theatre, where he has directed Mariela in the Desert, Electricidad, Zoot Suit, Millennium Mambo, Straight As A Line, Cloud Tectonics and six seasons of A Christmas Carol. He is the co-founder and former Artistic Director of Teatro Vista and has also directed at Missouri Rep., Portland Center Stage, Colorado Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare Repertory (now Chicago Shakespeare Theater) and Next Theatre. In February 2001 he directed Urban Zulu Mambo at The Signature Theatre off-Broadway in New York City. As an actor Godinez has appeared in numerous stage productions in Chicago and around the country, as well as the films The Fugitive, Above the Law and The Package. He is currently a professor of acting and Shakespeare at DePaul University. He also received a TCG National Theatre Artist Residency Grant to create an original adaptation of the novel Memory of Fire: Genesis by Eduardo Galeano, for the Goodman Theatre, and is the recipient of The Distinguished Service Award from the Lawyers for the Creative Arts.

Chicago Children's Theatre is proud to present A Year With Frog and Toad, book and lyrics by Willie Reale, music by Robert Reale and directed by Henry Godinez, in the Goodman's Owen Theatre, 170 N.
